Everyone in Congress, and politicians abroad, of course think the TPP agreement is a good thing. But they aren’t looking at it from an organic consumer’s eyes, an environmentalist or anyone who is the least bit concerned about their health. Right now, Democrats are not backing the agreement and news reports state that their lack of support will jeopardize all the progress Obama has made in Asia. But what type of progress are they exactly talking about? Well, the monetary gain type of course. What best benefits Corporate America’s bank accounts and to heck with the health or welfare of our environment and us.
Stop the Secret Trade Deals: the Monsanto Protection Act on Steroids!
If you thought the Monsanto Protection Act was bad, the secret trade deals called the TPP and TAFTA are a global nightmare. Right now two secret trade agreements, known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Trans-Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA), also called the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), are being negotiated behind closed doors like this spring when the Monsanto Protection Act was passed.
Just as we are on the verge of winning GMO labeling in the US, these secret negotiations could eliminate the ability of countries around the world to label GMOs or impose common sense restrictions on the sale of genetically engineered seed and food in their countries if Monsanto and other biotech companies get their way. They could also make it illegal to label GMOs in the U.S., placing the decision in the hands of corporate lobbyists and Monsanto GMO stooges.
Senate Votes 60 to 37 for Monsanto’s Secret Trade Deal
We regret to inform you that earlier this morning the U.S. Senate voted 60 to 37 to pass cloture on Fast Track authority on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). Today’s vote was a procedural vote on cloture, which limits debate on this secret international trade agreement, the language of which, the American public has not been allowed to read.
This vote, and the secrecy surrounding the Fast Track agreement, is an absolute betrayal of the American people that undermines representative democracy and the important consumer protection laws that local, state and federal elected officials have passed to protect our health, environment and economy.
How you feel about the newest trade agreement (TPP) depends on who you are listening to: politicians, corporations or environmentalists. Now which one do you think probably has our best interests in mind over anything else?
What this all means is that as a food consumer, you had better get yourself educated on what is best for you and your environment, because we certainly cannot rely on our representatives to do it. Can we?
Bottom line: you can’t go wrong supporting organic. And you had better do so before Monsanto legislation and Corporate America abolish it so we no longer have organic as a choice – because that is what they are shooting for. Eliminate the competition.
The fact that consumers are not, and have never, been allowed to even read the TPP agreement should give us all concern that this bit of legislation most certainly does not benefit us in any way.
