First Step to Connecting with Self: Getting Rid of Selfishness.
A lot of people THINK they reconnect with nature on the weekends. They say, “Yeah, I went hiking this weekend, or fishing, or sat on the beach or went for a walk,” but this is ENJOYING nature not connecting with it.
While being in nature, did you marvel at it’s ingenuity, it’s perfection? The perfectly blue sky with dabbles of fluffy white clouds above the perfectly green, nourishing lamdscape, surrounded by perfect trees and vegetation grown by the warmth of the perfect sun, the rains and how it all gives us oxygen to breathe and food to eat? The animals and organisms that are in perfect balance? That we have been given everything we need to not just survive, but live happy, healthy, nurturing lives when man does not intervene with his greedy, commercialized ways?
Did you really look? Listen? Admire and soak it in? Sure, we all realize this concept, but we fail to appreciate it fully when we live the way we do. When we are self-indulgent, self-motivated, self-destructive.
Nature has a great deal to teach us about living in balance, harmony, and to ultimate health, but we have chosen to ignore her, and worse yet, destroy her. Did you think about any of this while you were soaking up the sun, swimming in the ocean, breathing mountain air, listening to sweet songs of the birds?
Probably not. When we think about nature, our environment, as a perfect provider for literally centuries, we realize how arrogant we are to believe that mankind thinks he can do better. You cannot improve on perfection, and our environment cannot be more perfect when it is not tampered with. It is in perfect balance, harmony and health. Man is the one destroying this perfection, not any other organism on this planet. Us and only us; the most destructive species on Earth. Equated by some to a virus that destroys its host and then moves on.
This would all seem like harsh words were it not true. True to our new human nature of being self-serving at the expense of all else, including the future existence of our own species. An intelligent being would say this is utter stupidity. Only man will destroy himself for monetary gain at the expense of his own health and survival. We have forgotten the # 1 golden rule of nature and all existence: survival of the species is put before all else, otherwise, what are we doing it all for if we will destroy ourselves in the process? It’s is not logical, it goes against nature and it goes against life.
So, next time you go for a walk in the woods or your local, commercialized park, keep these ideas in mind. THEN and only then can you say you have connected with nature. When you start to truly behold all her perfect wonders and then wonder why mankind is determined to destroy it and what part you are playing in it all.
Next, ask yourself, “How am I a part of the destruction rather than a part of the solution.” Why do I not appreciate this perfect body I have been given and insist on destroying it by eating foods that are bad for me and cause disease and illness.” Why do I constantly support businesses who are destroying our perfect environment? Why do I take and take and give nothing back to this environment that was designed to serve me so well? Why do I find more happiness in material things like ipods and big screen t.v.s than in planting and nuturing living things?
Then you will be on your way to understanding the connection we all have, the responsibility, to the bigger picture. Something we all contribute to, negatively or positively, and which each and every individual is ultimately a part of. That it is not you and only you that exists in this world, this universe. When you start to think of yourself as part of the universe rather than just your close circle of friends, job and family, you will start to understand your part in the bigger picture. This is the beginning of discovering yourself as being part of a larger whole, not just your own meager existence, and you start to lose self-indulgence, arrogance, wasteful living, selfishness.
We are not suggesting you “give up” your possessions, job, family or your commercialized existence. We are saying put it in perspective and realize that they are not what makes you a whole, heathy person. That it’s way-passed time to support and acknowledge the other side of your existence, stop ignoring it, destroying it and give back to it, nurture it. After all, it’s a part of you. That from which you have sprung, are deeply rooted in, but have forgotten about along the way. Balance your life, yourself, by realizing that the commercialized, socialized stereotypes you stick to or hold dear really are not. They are indulgences. Not necessary for your health or survival. If the world suffered a major catastrophe and all your possessions were destroyed, how would you survive? Let us hope that you could still live off the land, the way nature intended. But if it is gone? Then what? Your big screen t.v will not do you any good whatsoever. So…we are saying, prioritize and put “things” in perspective, skewed social rules in perspective. Put life in perspective. What is truly important and what is just selfish indulgence. You can still allow yourself your commercialized luxuries, but what are you doing to preserve your actual existence; your survival? Most of us? Nothing. We are part of the problem not the solution.
Being part of something bigger than yourself (the universe) is a constant awe-inspiring, extremely gratifying feeling that the majority of people on Earth will never experience. To travel down that path of improving yourself, you first must realize and discover what you truly are. From where you truly come from and from what you are truly a part of. Then….let the growth begin.
In next month’s issue of Inner Circkles, we will take another step toward our roots and true inner nature.
Inner Circkles Monthly Exercise:
This month, think about Mother Earth, all she provides and the universe. Think about your part in it all. Take a walk and truly appreciate all you see in nature. Marvel at her abilities and her perfection. Then think of one thing you can do this month that will give back to her. See yourself as part of the universe, the big picture; daily.
