The Truth About Fibrocystic Disease.

Uterine Fibroids are so common that 70-80% of all women get them and 1/3 of all women get hysterectomies before age 50 because of complications caused by large fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or cancer resulting from a fibrocystic condition. What's wrong with this picture? These stats are alarming and tell us something is definitely not right in our world. The medical profession treats these statistics like they are just commonplace and therefore women should just accept it, get a hysterectomy, and move on. It's a bit disturbing that we have to start cutting out body parts in order to live a normal life or survive.

Women must start taking matters into their own hands by educating themselves and passing onto their girls the preventative measures that have to be taken early in life to avoid being part of the 3/4 of the female population that has to have their reproductive organs removed. Having body organs cut out is NOT normal. We have to stop the medical profession from treating it like it is. Educate yourself, educate others.

The part of the medical profession that has gone so far as to study the cause of fibroids have determined that they are caused by too much estrogen. A small number of doctors who are studying fibroids will add that they also seem to be caused by hormone imbalances, specifically too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. A minute number of doctors have gone out on a limb and suggested that this imbalance is being caused by the high amount of chemical estrogens in our food supply and environment. Doctor John Lee devoted his practice to researching the cause of the high incidence of fibroid tumors in woman before his death in 2003.

"Strictly speaking, it's possible that we are all -- men, women and children -- suffering a little from estrogen dominance, because there is so much of it in our environment. You would have to virtually live in a bubble to escape the excess estrogens we're exposed to through pesticides, plastics, industrial waste products, car exhaust, meat, soaps and much of the carpeting, furniture and paneling that we live with indoors every day. You may have on-and-off sinus problems, headaches, dry eyes, asthma or cold hands and feet for example, and not know to attribute them to your exposure to xenohormones. Over time the exposure will cause more chronic problems such as arthritis and premenopause symptoms, and may be a direct or indirect cause of cancer".

"The uterus is one of the first organs to manifest symptoms when a woman's hormones are out of balance. Two of the most common uterine symptoms of premenopause syndrome are an enlarged uterus, and uterine fibroids. Women with PMS often experience painful periods (dysmenorrhea) which are most often caused when the endometrial lining of the uterus extends into the muscular wall of the uterus (adenomyosis). When shedding of the endometrium occurs (menstruation), the blood is released into the muscular lining, causing severe pain. Conventional medicine treats this pain with NSAIDS (non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen, but ignores the underlying metabolic hormonal imbalance that caused it. The problem can often be simply resolved by restoring proper progesterone levels, which restores normal growth and shedding of the endometrium.
Estrogen dominance causes the uterus to grow, and without the monthly balancing effect of progesterone, it doesn't have the proper signals to stop growing. In some women this results in an enlarged uterus that presses on other organs, such as the bladder, and often on the digestive system, and generally causes discomfort and heavy menstrual bleeding. In other women estrogen dominance results in fibroids, which are tough, fibrous, non-cancerous lumps that grow in the uterus. Some fibroids can grow to the size of a grapefruit or cantaloupe, causing constant bleeding and such heavy menstrual periods that the blood loss is akin to hemorrhaging." Dr. John Lee.

Fibroid tumors are 2 to 3 times more common in African-American women than other American women, tend to be larger, more numerous, more symptomatic, and black women get them at an earlier age. A study by researchers at Boston University released in 2009 suggested there may be a link between the kinds of hair relaxers used by millions of black women to an increased instances of fibroid tumors.
Dr. Ray L. Howell, an obstetrician, gynecologist, and surgeon based in Atlanta who has specialized in women’s issues for 25 years, has co-authored the book, “Black Women and Fibroids: A Conversation with Black Women,” that cites the study conducted between 1997 and 2009, involving 23,580 pre-menopausal African-American women. The study found 7,146 cases of fibroids—a rate two to three times higher than for women who did not use relaxers.The increased incidence may be linked to exposure to thyalates, chemicals added to the perfume portion of relaxers that mimics estrogen-like materials that encourage fibroid growth. It is believed they may enter the body through scalp lesions and burns caused by relaxers.
Howell’s  said the study was not conclusive enough to make a direct link between hair relaxers and fibroids and further study was warranted.  It did urge women who use relaxers, however, to avoid getting scalp burns or scars from the formulas to reduce the chances of thyalates getting into the bloodstream.

And yet, although a number of very prominent doctors recognize estrogen dominance, (Michael Lam, M.D., M.P.H., A.B.A.A.M and Dr. Christine Northrup M.D are two more doctors among many who have been brave enough to publish their estrogen dominance findings publicly.) treat it with great success, and publish studies on it, you would be amazed the number of gynecologists that have never heard of estrogen dominance or won't admit such a thing exists. I went to 5 different gyn doctors in my area and not a single one had ever heard of it.

Fibrocystic Breasts: More than half of all women have fibrocystic breasts at some point. 30-60% of women and at least 50% of women of childbearing years. Research from a 2001 study reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility shows women who consume 500 milligrams of caffeine daily, the equivalent of 4-5 cups of coffee, produce 70% more estrogen in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle than women who consume less than 1 cup of coffee. If you like beef, you should know that Italian research reported in Obsetrics and Gynecology shows while eating red meat doubles the risk of developing uterine fibroids, eating plenty of vegetables cuts fibroid risk in half!
Feedback we've had from birth control users suggests that even the newest low dose oral contraceptives can cause breast swelling, and aggravate fibroid problems and endometriosis for susceptible women.

There exist studies that link low iodine levels to fibrocystic breast disease. Also, there is evidence that the low breast cancer rates in Japan are due to their high iodine intake (form seafood). It is not only our thyroid that needs iodine -- breast tissue (and other glands) do as well. Increasing your iodine intake is definitely something worthwhile as it can help breast pain and fibrocystic breast changes.

While caffeine may not cause fibrocystic disease all on its own, it definitely aggravates the condition, and if a woman is borderline fibrocystic, it will push her to have fibroids or fibrocystic breasts. Caffeine increases estrogen production.

What's a Woman to Do?
Astonishing isn't it: that there is literally tons of studies and research that have been out for a while now on the cause of this condition and yet so many gynecologist refuse to acknowledge it, and the ones that do, treat it with chemical hormone replacement therapy, the pill (which adds insult to injury by adding even more estrogen to the situation) or removal of reproductive organs? This is why women need to start taking their health into their own hands. If you want to decrease your odds of developing this overwhelming condition, here are the smartest choices you can make and the earlier in life the better:

• Stop drinking coffee, eating chocolate, green tea, caffeinated sodas, energy drinks and anything with caffeine in it. It has been my experience that even the tiniest amount of caffeine exasperates a fibrocystic condition. How do I know this? I felt it. Take note of how your breasts feel after consuming caffeine of any kind for an extended period of time. Then go off of caffeine for a minimum of 2 months and see if your breasts don't feel softer, less lumpy, less swollen, tender and painful. I did. That was all the evidence I needed. Now imagine what caffeine is doing to your uterus over years and years of consumption - which you can't feel until it's often too late.

• Cut back on red meats. All commercial meats have growth hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals added. Eat only hormone-free organic meats and cut back on all meats, even organic. Meats have animal estrogen in them naturally and the average American can easily cut back their meat consumption by half and never miss it. We consume too much meat and not enough fresh fruits and vegetables, which is detrimental to our health in many ways.

• Get regular daily exercise. Some research suggests that a sedentary lifestyle also aggravates hormone imbalances because lack of exercise can stop hormone production or lead to excess estrogen being stored in fat reserves.

Herbs and Vitamins: Take iron if you know you have fibroids because fibroids tend to use up a great deal of your blood supply which can leave you exhausted and anemic. Take Vitex (also known as Chasteberry) because it helps promote the production of progesterone in the body and greatly helps to balance hormones. Take Milk Thistle to help out your liver because it will surely be under a heavy overload for a long time while trying to eliminate excess hormones and toxins. It is said through research that Beta Carotene, turmeric root and oregano can help increase progesterone production as well. I would highly recommend taking the turmeric and oregano oil to help with all the inflammation a woman has throughout her body being caused by the hormone imbalance. If you are experiencing bloating and digestive problems as well, these two herbs will help a great deal. Reishi mushroom is fantastic for balancing hormones, as an anti-histamine blocker if you are experiencing allergies due to the hormone imbalance, anti-inflammatory and just balances the body and sets it right in general.

Alternate the reishi with the vitex to balance your hormones while you take the progesterone cream because it's next to impossible to know from day to day how much cream to use since hormones change daily and depending on what you eat and are exposed to. Using these two herbs to do the balancing act for you is very effective.

• If you are experiencing a hormone imbalance - such as severe PMS, excessive bleeding, cramping, pain, bloating, moodiness - use natural bio-identical progesterone cream which can be purchased at most health food stores. This is a form of progesterone made from Mexican Wild Yam that your body can utilize without the side effect sor cancer risk of the chemical progesterone creams the doctors prescribe. Severe progesterone depletion can cause red bumps on the eyelids, rashes, hives, muscle weakness and chronic fatigue along with the severe PMS symptoms mentioned above, fibroids and a condition known as adenomyosis - an abnormal buildup of the uterine lining - as well as be a precursor to breast, uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers. As you use the bio-identical natural progesterone cream - just a small dab at a time until you see how your body reacts - you will experience immediate relief, but depending on just how deficient you are on progesterone, you may need to apply it 3-4 times a day, every day, during the last 2 weeks of your cycle, every month, or as little as just once a day for 3-4 days. Every woman is different, and your body will tell you how much you need.
**a word about progesterone creams: Try to find a brand that does NOT package it in plastic, as this will only be adding chemical estrogens to your body that you don't need. We searched high and low and only found one brand so far: Serenity by Health Science. that contains the fewest xenoestrogens, although it is still packaged in a plastic jar, it doesn't seem to leach as many xenoestrogens into the product as the soft plastic tubes do. Serenity is also 3 times more potent than other progesterone creams on the market, including the popular Progest by Emerita, and we found it works far better than any other creams we have tested. See our sidebar in the left column for more informtion on Serenity.

• Avoid foods packaged in plastic, body care in plastics, microwaving food in plastic, new cars with that plastic "new car" smell, and inhaling fumes from plastics AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, including from new carpeting, which can take up to 3 months to fully off-gas. Given the recent alarming studies that show we have been poisoning ourselves with excess chemical estrogens in plastics for years, this is the single largest area women need to work on to improve their health not just with fibrocystic condition.

• Avoid body care products in plastics. Including toothpaste, moisturizers, soaps etc. They will only add chemical estrogens to your body and cancel out the progesterone cream you are using. Also avoid bras made with spandex, lycra and if possible, that use plastic underwire. When you sweat, these petro-chemical materials will leach into your skin.Try to buy only 100% cotton bras; nylon is okay, but cotton is better.

Note: The limitations above may seem a bit severe to some women, but they are the minimum of what it will honestly take to reverse your fibrocystic / estrogen dominant condition and avoid hysterectomy, chemical hormone replacement therapy and other surgeries and severe health complications. The question you need to ask is how important is your health and your life to you? Keep this in mind: No amount of money or vanity will help you if you lose your health. Without your health, you have nothing. Anybody who has ever been terminally ill has attested to that. It boils down to quality of life - which should be everybody's primary focus and achievement regardless of any small sacrifice they may have to endure to get there.

Beware of Caffeine Additives in the Most Unexpected Places.

Well, if reading the article above isn't enough to convince women of the dangers of caffeine consumption in today's world of estrogen-overload, here's more evidence that should sound an alarm for everyone about the risks they take consuming caffeine products.

It's surprising how many products people are not aware of as containing caffeine: green tea, chocolate, decaf coffee still contains small amounts of caffeine, many sodas, energy drinks, green coffee weight loss pills, green tea supplements and now....the food industry is adding caffeine to numerous products that would not contain it naturally. The only foods that research has revealed so far as containing caffeine naturally are the coffee bean, the cocoa bean and the tea leaf. Any products containing green tea, such as most chai mixes, or coffee and chocolate will have significant amounts of caffeine.

Of course, we are all aware of the immediate effects of drinking caffeinated products: such as that it raises blood pressure and alertness, but not many people consider the long term health detriments to drinking and eating caffeine on a daily basis for years and years.
Caffeine causes a hardening of the arteries with long term use. It also has been linked to fibrocystic breast disease and fibroids in women. While it has not been determined specifically if caffeine causes fibroids, it definitely exasperates an already existing fibrocystic condition. So as a woman consuming caffeine, you are greatly increasing your risk of having to have a hysterectomy before you are 50 years old and developing breast, uterine or ovarian cancers. Is it worth that kind of risk to you?

Caffeine can lead to erosion of the stomach lining with excessive consumption, (Leaky Gut Syndrome as discussed in last month's issue of Health Circkles) is a cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcers, an overly-acidic bodily condition linked to many cancers, fibromyalgia, arthritis and any inflammatory disease.

Regular caffeine consumption is hard on the heart because of the arteriosclerosis mentioned above and the high blood pressure it causes. That adds heart problems and disease to the list of side effects associated with heavy caffeine use. But caffeine does not have to be consumed in high amounts, or for a long period of time, to do damage. Just one small dose of caffeine aggravates fibrocystic conditions, causes inflammation throughout the entire body due to the extremely high levels of acid it contains, and raises the blood pressure, which leads us to ask, is any amount really safe? Constant high inflammation leads to many other illnesses and cancers. The level of acidity that caffeinated products produce in the body is way above what the body should be functioning under, and inflammation has been targeted as the single most harmful condition that leads to disease.

The FDA is concerned enough to launch a study of the effects of all the caffeine being added to so many products these days. Energy drinks have come under fire as posing a health risk as it is, but now caffeine is being added to gum, candy, waffles, water, syrup and any product the manufacturers can see a market for. This kind of a caffeine overload will most certainly have a negative effect on our health for all the reasons we have already stated. The FDA stopped manufacturers from marketing extra caffeinated soda a few years ago, but to what avail? Since manufacturers are now being allowed to add it to everything else.

Wrigleys is promoting a new pack of gum with eight pieces, each containing as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee.
From the FDA: "The gum is just one more unfortunate example of the trend to add caffeine to food. Our concern is about caffeine appearing in a range of new products, including ones that may be attractive and readily available to children and adolescents, without careful consideration of their cumulative impact.
One pack of this gum is like having four cups of coffee in your pocket. Caffeine is even being added to jelly beans, marshmallows, sunflower seeds and other snacks for its stimulant effect.
Meanwhile, "energy drinks" with caffeine are being aggressively marketed, including to young people. An instant oatmeal on the market boasts that one serving has as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, and then there are similar products, such as a so-called "wired" waffle and "wired" syrup with added caffeine."

From the FDA:

Q. What currently are FDA requirements concerning caffeine being added to foods?
A. Manufacturers can add it to products if they decide it meets the relevant safety standards, and if they include it on the ingredient list. While various uses may meet federal food safety standards, the only time FDA explicitly approved adding caffeine was for colas in the 1950s. Existing rules never anticipated the current proliferation of caffeinated products.

Q. Is it possible that FDA would set age restrictions for purchase?
A. We have to be practical; enforcing age restrictions would be challenging. For me, the more fundamental questions are whether it is appropriate to use foods that may be inherently attractive and accessible to children as the vehicles to deliver the stimulant caffeine, and whether we should place limits on the amount of caffeine in certain products.

Q. Have you taken any actions on other caffeinated products?
A. In 2010, we brought about the withdrawal from the market of caffeinated alcoholic beverages, primarily malt beverages, in part because of studies indicating that combined ingestion of caffeine and alcohol may lead to hazardous and life-threatening situations. Caffeine can mask some of the sensory cues that people might normally rely on to determine their level of intoxication.

A person has to ask themselves: Is consuming caffeine worth the risks ? Many people educated to the true concerns regarding caffeine and not listening to the ad campaigns promoting this chemical are saying, "No. It is not worth getting breast cancer, having a heart attack, IBS, Fibromyalgia or any other long-term, potentiall fatal illness." Manufacturers keep putting out studies about the "health benefits" of consuming dark chocolate, green coffee, etc, but they always fail to educate consumers on the downside of these caffeine-containing products.

HOME REMEDIES: Rashes.

Several things can cause a rash, and ultimately, if you can find the cause it will be of the greatest benefit to avoid it. A rash is the body's way of alerting us that something is wrong or an irritant to avoid. However, it is often very difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of a skin eruption, therefore, here are some general remedies to try.

Allergies: for a rash caused by an allergic reaction, it is best to treat the allergy in order to get rid of the rash effectively. Some very good herbal anti-histamines include: oregano oil, reishi mushroom and nettles which should be taken internally in the form of tea or supplements. They will stop the allergy symtoms until you can determine the cause.

Skin applications: For itchy rashes, straight cortizone creams work well, or herbal creams made from arnica, calendula, comfrey root, tea tree or plantain.

 


HERBS: How to use herbs for maximum benefit. Short and sweet descriptions and uses written by our on-staff Nutritional Herbalist. Always remember that herbs should be treated as a medicine. Almost all of our modern-day medicines are derived from compounds found in herbs and plants. If you have not used a particular herb before, try a half dose at first to make sure you do not have an unfavorable reaction to it.

Chickweed Stellaria media

Medicinal Properties: Externally for skin irritations, eczema, psoriasis, vaginitis, abscesses and boils.

How to Use: Make a tea to be used as a poultice on the affected area. 1 Tbsp herb to 1 C water for a strong poultice. Let cool, dip a cloth into tea and apply to affected area.

Parts Used: Whole plant

Warnings: Use externally only, internally it can cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Growing: Is very invasive, so be careful where you plant it

Some Herb Basics: Most herbs work better on an empty stomach. A few exceptions are garlic, goldenseal and cayenne due to stomach upset. Herbs work in a cumulative fashion meaning they are not a "one dose wonder." They need to build up in the system a little, usually within 2-3 doses, before any real affect can be noticed. Fresh herbs always work better than old herbs and science is always proving the fact that a whole herb usually is more effective than one isolated compound of that herb.

 


FOODS THAT HEAL:
Do you know what foods will give you more energy, calm your nerves, act as an anti-inflammatory, help prevent cancers, or help you lose weight? Hopefully this column will help you to have a better understanding of food and its healing properties. The best diet for optimal health is a wide variation of foods, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and minimally cooked whole foods. Sweets, fatty foods, meat, dairy and carbs in moderation.

Buckwheat:

Therapeutic Properties: This grain has been known for years to help stabilize blood sugar levels thus being of benefit to diabetics. Buckwheat is also one of the least acid-forming grains and is more alkaline than whole wheat and gluten-free. Since wheat is a grain that is highly allergenic, buckwheat makes an excellent substitute for wheat products.
Buckwheat is high in rutin and other flavonoids which makes it just as good for lowering cholesterol as oats are but it's much lower in lactic acid than oats - which can cause inflammation in the body if consumed in large quantities. The high insoluable fiber of buckwheat has been shown to reduce the risk of women getting gallstones.

If you could only pick one whole grain to use, buckwheat would be the best choice.

Acid or Alkaline: Mildly acid forming

Significant Nutrients: High in magnesium, protein, B vitamins, trace minerals, phosphorus, insoluable fiber and potassium.

As a substitute for processed Grapenuts: roast your own buckwheat groats. Groats are the whole grain kernel in its unprocessed form. If you can't find roasted buckwheat groats at your local health food market, or don't want to pay the extra money for them (they are usually twice as expensive roasted as they are raw) you can easily and effortlessly roast them yourself. Here's how:

Buy about 2 pounds of raw buckwheat groats. Spread them out on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350º oven until browned. Periodically stir them or flip them with a spatula to get the groats as evenly browned on all sides as possible. The more "roasted" they are the more flavor they will have. When they are the desired degree of roasting you like, let them cool and poor them into a jar to keep in the cupboard.
When you get ready to eat them, simply pour about 1/2 cup of roasted groats into a bowl and top with your favorite milk. You can sweaten them a little with agave and add fruit.

NATURAL & ORGANIC PRODUCT REVIEW.

Serenity Progesterone Cream by Health Science. We had several women who are perimenopausal product test progesterone creams to determine which one worked the best and seemed to have the fewest, or no, chemical estrogen side effects from the plastic product packaging. While Progest seemed to work for some women with lesser symtoms of estrogen dominance, many complained that the cream worked well at first, but after using it for 2-3 weeks, they stated they seemed to feel worse.
