We Are Now Dying Younger.
With important information on Fibromyalgia, Food Allergies, Chronic Fatigue, Autoimmune disorders and more.

By L. J. Creapeau, CNH and Circkles Staff Nutritionist.

This may be the most important article you read this decade. Research was released about 6-8 months ago that stated we are now reducing our life expectancy (1). Americans are starting to die younger and with more health problems than just 50 years ago, so instead of increasing our longevity, we are now reversing it. Ever wonder why food allergies have dramatically increased in recent years? Why so many babies and young children are developing them almost at birth and at younger and younger ages? This has everything to do with impaired immune systems and weak digestion being on the rise. With every generation being born, we are producing a weaker and weaker race health-wise due to the way we all lack truly proper nutrition and abuse our bodies constantly. It's a simple biological fact that we are passing this genetic mutation on to our children. The only way to counteract this is as adults, we must start taking better care of ourselves so we don't pass our health afflictions and wrong eating habits onto our children.

As we age, our digestion naturally slows down like everything else and this may manifest itself in symptoms you may not realize as being linked to poor digestion - such as all the disorders listed below. But food allergies, immune diseases, neurological disorders, nutrient deficiencies, cancers etc., are increasing at an alarming rate at younger and younger ages in the U.S. One big problem linked to all of this is that digestive disorders can cause many diseases and conditions that doctors won't tell you are ultimately caused by poor digestion which causes poor nutrition. Another problem is that most people don't notice how awful they feel on a daily basis until they start to feel better and have something to compare it to, so many easy - to - remedy symptoms go unnoticed until they turn into something much more severe.

The breakdown of the mucosal intestinal lining is referred to as Leaky Gut Syndrome and is almost always associated with autoimmune diseases, as well as being responsible for a huge number of chronic illnesses. LGS is caused by alcohol abuse, overuse of NSAIDS such as Aleve and Advil, dysbiosis (intestinal flora imbalance), antibiotics, prescription corticosteroids such as prednisone, prescription hormones like birth control pills, chronic inflammation throughout the body, pH imbalance, illness, drugs, injury, aging, stress, chemotherapy or improper diet.
The digestive system is the body's first line of defense against viruses, parasites, toxins, bacteria and illness. When you eat something toxic, breathe in a virus, or ingest food with salmonella, Ecoli or any harmful bacteria, your digestive system is designed to cut it off at the pass before it can do any real damage. If your digestion is not working at it's best, your immune system is the next in line to react, because with a sluggish digestive system you are not breaking down and absorbing the nutrients you need to maintain the body's requirements and you are allowing harmful entities into the body. With Leaky Gut Syndrome, the intestinal lining has been weakened and becomes porous, thereby bypassing the body's first natural defense and allowing all sorts of things directly into the bloodstream that it shouldn't be. In LGS the abnormally large spaces between the cells of the gut wall allow toxic materials, undigested proteins, fats, wastes, bacteria, parasites etc. directly into the bloodstream that in a healthy gut would be repelled and eliminated. This condition, which can be verified with urine tests, sparks an emergency immune response from the body because the body cannot allow what it considers foreign, toxic, and potentially harmful substances into the blood. That would be fatal. So it creates an immune response by building up antibodies, or food allergies, to try and prevent us dumb humans from eating any more of what it considers a harmful substance because it's normal way of handling it has been compromised.
These antibodies get into various tissues and trigger an inflammatory response, such as asthma, chronic fatigue, vasculitis, Crohn's Disease, arthritis, and many more. Practically any organ or tissue of the body can be affected by food allergies caused by leaky gut and the symptoms present in different ways in different people.

We know eating peanuts shouldn't normally be bad for us, so why do many people have peanut allergies when others do not? For one thing, nuts are very hard to digest anyway, and automatically require a strong digestive system, and peanuts as well as soy are very close in genetic makeup to a foreign protein. So if the body cannot process them normally due to digestive problems, it will suspect peanuts or soy are a "foreign" enemy and it will react to them by building antibodies against a previously harmless food. Just as if you ingested a poison, in which your body will try to protect itself by making you vomit, the body has no choice but to protect itself against something it cannot process normally by giving you an allergy to it that makes you so miserable you will hopefully stop eating the offending food. The body will do whatever it must to protect itself from our ignorance and abuse. Survival mode is it's number one concern and duty. Unfortunately, it constantly has to fight our bad habits, laziness and ignorance to do it.

LGS also creates many mineral deficiencies linked to chronic diseases such as fibromyalgia. The carrier proteins needed in the gut to transport minerals to the blood are damaged by the inflamed digestive lining, so in many cases, magnesium deficiency will continue in spite of high supplementation doses because the carrier protein for magnesium is damaged and the body can no longer absorb magnesium no matter how much is taken orally. Muscle pain and spasms, popularly diagnosed as fibromyalgia, results. Also in the case of fibromyalgia, the intestines have been dumping toxins directly into the bloodstream due to leaky gut which overloads the liver. The toxins that the liver cannot neutralize are returned to the blood and keep circulating in the lymph and connective tissue which is ultimately the cause of the inflammation, pain and nerve disfunction called fibromyalgia. Doctors will only treat this condition with pain killers, steroids and anti-inflammatories, never addressing Leaky Gut Syndrome as the primary cause of fibromyalgia or other disorders caused by malabsorption. Zinc deficiency due to malabsorption results in hair loss and baldness as occurs in alopecia areata. Copper malabsorption can lead to osteoarthritis and high blood cholesterol. Bone problems develop as a result of calcium, boron, silicon and manganese malabsorption.

Anybody who has had food allergies knows that once the body reacts to something, it's very difficult to stop it from over-reacting to the same substance every time it comes into contact with the tiniest bit of it because now the body is hypersensitive to the allergen. This is because it no longer has the defenses it needs in the digestive system to properly process it. If you never had food allergies before and suddenly are developing them, you can bet LGS is the cause. A study that came out a few years ago suggested that people could overcome food allergies by re-introducing the allergen in very minuscule amounts over time. This food allergy technique can only be effective however, if the allergy sufferer first strengthens and corrects their digestive system before even trying to re-introduce the allergen. Otherwise, no matter how small the quantity, the body is highly likely to always over-react to it unless the immune system - specifically the digestive system's part in it - is corrected. Allergies are the body's way of screaming at you that something is wrong. Unfortunately, consumers do not take allergies seriously enough, and modern medicine throws drugs at the symptoms rather than fixing the underlying digestive problem; which means the patient will forever have to take allergy medications and the problem will never be solved, just covered up.

It's estimated that over 50% of the U.S. population has some degree of Leaky Gut Syndrome. Over 40% of which self medicate for indigestion. We spend $6.6 billion on GI drugs, $2 billion on laxatives and antacids. If we ate correctly, these numbers would drop to almost nonexistence. Instead of spending billions of dollars on digestive aids for sluggish digestion, which is putting the cart after the horse, we should spend that money on proper nutrition thereby warding off all sorts of diseases and complications before they start. Research has shown, and Naturopathic Doctors know, that when the body is given everything it needs, it will function without disease and distress. So if your body is reacting by causing you to be ill, in 95% of all cases, it is ultimately linked to a deficiency, or overexposure of something harmful.

Rebuilding a Healthy Gut:
If you are experiencing digestive problems, here is the best regimen anybody has found to repair it. This process, on average, takes about 6-18 months to fully reverse leaky gut syndrome depending on how diligent you are with it; it can take years for severe cases. People over 50 years old should start to follow this procedure regularly because their digestion is naturally slowing with age and their immunity will be weaker at a time when they need it most.

- Take a plant enzyme with every meal to help you digest if you are experiencing bloating or gastritis after eating. Plant enzymes work much better than other enzymes because they are acid-stable. In other words, they are able to resist the rigors of stomach acid in order to reach the intestinal tract where they will do the most good. Other enzymes do not make it passed the stomach and thus are completely ineffective.

- Brewer's yeast is excellent: We wrote an article on brewer's yeast last month explaining how extremely beneficial it is for rebuilding and maintaining the entire body and the digestive system because not only is it the only supplement that contains RDA - a compound that will help you to digest proteins, carbs and fats, it has all the essential amino acids (proteins), including NAG (N-Acetyl-L-Glutamine) which is very relevant to rebuilding the intestinal lining and scavenging free radicals. Also, since brewer's yeast is a complete protein that is easily digested by the body, it makes the best protein source to take until your digestion can handle meat - which will not be broken down well at all by a sluggish digestive system and should be avoided until it's repaired.

- Rebuild the friendly flora in the digestive system with high quality probiotics. We would recommend a refrigerated, fresh probiotic over any shelf-stable pills or processed yogurts. Acidophilus is a good place to start, but there are so many more digestive flora than just this one that the body requires, so get a multi-flora supplement or probiotic.

- Additional supplements may be necessary if you are experiencing severe intestinal problems. Gamma-oryzanol is a rice bran supplement that helps to heal and protect digestive mucosa and rebuild the lining. It should be taken before bed, or first thing in the morning 1-2 hours before eating so it's on an empty stomach. For people with severe cases of gastric distress and specifically gastritis - which is an inflammation of the intestinal lining resulting in severe bloating and pain- Gamma-oryzanol works very well.

- Free radicals, which cause cancers, are produced by intestinal inflammation and pathogens, so be diligent in eating plenty of antioxidant foods while in this repair mode. It's a good idea anyway, but with your digestion being compromised, you have a higher risk for having even more free radicals in your system than normal.

- In order to reverse leaky gut and food allergies, the diet must be changed to be as hypo-allergenic as possible. Baby and honor your digestion during this healing process by eating only organic foods with at least 50% of your diet being raw vegetables, 25% being raw fruits, use brewer's yeast and organic eggs as meat substitutes trying to stay away from meats as much as possible. Eat smaller meals more frequently rather than large meals. Avoid fish for the first 6 months of this regimen because the high mercury content in it will exasperate the problem, as well as sugar, flours with gluten, caffeine, alcohol and high fat foods like dairy and meats. Use flax oils, olive and grape seed oils instead to get your omega fatty acids. Avoid chemicals, drugs and over-the-counter remedies especially Advil or Aleve, at all costs while fixing your immune system otherwise you are reversing any progress you are making.

- If you know you have intestinal bacteria or parasites as a result of leaky gut, it's also necessary to take a natural antibiotic such as echinacea, colloidal silver, black walnut hull extract or garlic.

Another study from just 2-3 months ago stated that people who eat organic can live 5-10 years longer on average than those who don't (2). This isn't rocket science People; it's common sense. The saying, "you are what you eat," is exactly right. While the body is very adaptable and you can "survive" while ingesting petroleum products from plastics and a multitude of other toxins, you won't survive very well or very long. Just try it. Try eating nothing but organic and balancing your diet to what we mentioned above and see if you don't feel better in as little as a couple weeks. The majority of people who try it never go back to eating the way they used to because they can feel the difference themselves and there is no greater proof that what we are telling you is true than that. Of course, if you don't even try it, you will never know.

Healthier Soda Substitutes. By L. J. Creapeau, CNH and Circkles Staff Nutritionist.

We drink far too much soda in the U.S. All the sugar in the form of corn syrup in sodas just gets turned into fat by the body and causes many major health issues such as Alzheimer's, obesity, dental decay, diabetes and ADD. Diet sodas may be lower in sugar, but almost all of them contain aspartame, a sugar substitute which research has proven years ago causes brain tumors in lab rats and is linked to many nerve disorders and cancer.

Habits can be hard to break, and kicking the soda habit is next to impossible for some people. The key to any addiction, including an addiction to soda, is to find an acceptable substitute. We have found one that most people deem is very good for getting away from the sugar-water we call soda.

Fruit Spritzers: Mix one part plain or lime seltzer (in a glass bottle to avoid the aluminum contamination which causes Alzheimer's) and one part fruit juice - from frozen concentrate that is pure juice and no added sugars - together in a glass. You can blend strawberries or other fruit in a blender and add them to this refreshing drink. It will give you the sweet carbonated taste your taste buds are addicted to so you can wean yourself off of harmful sodas, and it will be so much healthier for you and your kids. Everybody we know who has tried spritzers says they don't miss soda at all.

Citrus Spritzer: A really refreshing spritzer recipe is 1 part orange juice, 1 part pineapple juice, 1 part lime seltzer mixed together and squeeze the juice from one thick lime wedge into it. Refreshing because it 's not too sweet, healthy because it's packed full of vitamin C from the citrus. Really good with blended fresh strawberries.

Grape Spritzer: 1 part grape juice, 1 part lime seltzer, add squeezed juice from a thick lime wedge and throw the wedge into the glass. The lime cuts the sweetness of the grape juice and really balances it out so it's more refreshing.

Mango Spritzer: You may be able to find mango juice, but if not, cut up a fresh mango and blend it until mostly smooth. Add to 1 part pineapple juice, 1 part orange juice, 1 part seltzer, and juice from a fresh-squeezed lime wedge. Also very good with strawberries added. With a drink like this, who wants soda?

Blueberry Spritzer: Blend some frozen blueberries just until crushed. Add to 1 part apple juice, 1 part seltzer and squeeze the juice from a thick lemon wedge into it. Add the lemon wedge to the drink to make it more thirst-quenching rather than sweet.

Grapefruit Lemonade Spritzer: Mix 1 part grapefruit juice, 1 part lemonade, 1 part seltzer. This is very refreshing on a hot summer day after mowing the lawn to wash down the dust in your throat.

If you tend to get gas and bloating from carbonated beverages, of course, skip the seltzer and just try the juice mixes mentioned above.

Iced Chai: Chai has many health benefits and makes a nice, relaxing summer drink when iced. Here's a recipe to make your own from scratch to avoid the aseptic containers most chai beverages come in which are lined with aluminum. Always avoid aseptic containers for this reason. (Aseptic containers are the ones that look like juice boxes only bigger and allow manufacturers to put products in them such as soy milk, broth, soups etc. so they are shelf- stable and don't need to be refrigerated.) Food in these containers never tastes as good as fresh or in glass, and you run the risk of getting Alzheimer's and aluminum related cancers from the aluminum lining they use in them.
You can buy good chai mixes that come in glass. Add 1 part chai mix to 1 part almond or coconut milk and poor over ice. Adjust the chai mix to suit your taste as far as how strong you like it. Some mixes are pretty spicy. The best mix we have found is a fresh chai mix by Bakti Chai in a glass bottle usually found in the refrigerated section next to the beverages or teas.

Save Tons of Money, Make Your Own: Chai is mostly just about the spices, which are very inexpensive per serving. So it's very easy to make your own and save a ton of money on mixes. Brew up 4 cups of green tea and add 3-4 teaspoons of honey to it while it's still warm. Let it cool in the frig, then mix it with 4 cups of almond milk, add about 1-2 tsp fresh-grated ginger root depending on how spicy you like it. Keep in mind, the ginger will get stronger the longer it sits in the milk. Add 1/4 tsp nutmeg and 1/4 tsp cinnamon. Mix well in a blender and keep refrigerated to use throughout the week. When you get ready to make yourself an iced chai drink, shake up your mix, poor a glassful and add a couple cubes of ice. Very nutritious, full of antioxidants and vitamins. It will last about 2 weeks in the frig. This is also extremely soothing on an upset stomach and a study that came out about a year ago revealed fresh ginger root can prevent colon cancer.

Kids will go more for the spritzers than the chai. If you told them the spritzers were soda, most of them would never know the difference. It's much better for them to be drinking a spritzer with juice and fruit that has some vitamins, minerals and a lot less sugar, than a soda which is nothing but sugar water with no nutritional benefits whatsoever. That goes for you too.

The key to killing off warts is to stop the flow of oxygen to them. This may sound like a strange home remedy, but if you put duct tape over plantar warts and leave it on continuously, it suffocates the wart until it starts to die. Scrape off any dead skin daily and repeat the process until the wart is gone. Some people have added using crushed aspirin or apple cider vinegar, spreading it on the wart and then covering it with the duct tape. Others swear by drinking green tea daily, which may work because of the tannins or caffeine.

Our experience, and that of many others, is that the duct tape solutions works the best. This method cannot and should not be used for genital warts, since they are in a very sensitive area. Keep duct tape over the wart continually every day until the wart turns black or falls off. Apply fresh duct tape daily and scrape off any excess dead skin on the wart before applying a new piece of tape.

Thuja occidentalis ointment has been found effective for genital warts. Thuja occidentalis  is an  evergreen  coniferous tree, in the cypress family  Cupressaceae, which is native to the northeast of the United States and the southeast of Canada. Common names include: White Cedar, Yellow Cedar, Atlantic White Cedar, Eastern White Cedar, Swamp cedar, Cedrus Lycea, False White Cedar, Hackmatack, Lebensbaum, Thuia du Canada,  American Arborvitae or just Arborvitae.

The needles or branch of the tree are used for medicinal properties. Therapeutically, thuja is used in two forms - infusion and tincture. Since most tinctures are made with alcohol which will burn, we do not recommend using it for genital warts.

Homemade Infusion: To prepare an infusion with thuja, add one teaspoonful of the dehydrated herb to a cup (250 ml) of boiling water and allow it to steep for about 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and keep refrigerated for use. For best results, this infusion should be applied three times every day.

HERBS: How to use herbs for maximum benefit. Short and sweet descriptions and uses written by our on-staff Nutritional Herbalist. Always remember that herbs should be treated as a medicine. Almost all of our modern-day medicines are derived from compounds found in herbs and plants. If you have not used a particular herb before, try a half dose at first to make sure you do not have an unfavorable reaction to it.

Chaste Berry (Vitex) Vitex agnus castus

Medicinal Properties: Mostly known for  menstrual cycle irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a more severe form of PMS called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and symptoms of menopause. It is also used for treating “lumpy” (fibrocystic) breasts, female infertility, preventing miscarriage in women with low levels of a hormone called progesterone, controlling bleeding and helping the body force out the placenta after childbirth, and increasing breast milk.

Some men use vitex agnus-castus for increasing the flow of urine, for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and for reducing sexual desire. Historians say that monks chewed chaste tree parts to make it easier to maintain their celibacy.

Vitex agnus-castus is also used for acne, nervousness, dementia, joint conditions, colds, upset stomach, spleen disorders, headaches, migraine, eye pain, body inflammation, and swelling.

Some people apply vitex agnus-castus to the skin to flush out parasites and to prevent insect bites and stings

How to Use: Tastes horrible to make a tea of, so I would suggest using capsules or an extract.

Parts Used: Dried berries or leaves.

Some Herb Basics: Most herbs work better on an empty stomach. A few exceptions are garlic, goldenseal and cayenne due to stomach upset. Herbs work in a cumulative fashion meaning they are not a "one dose wonder." They need to build up in the system a little, usually within 2-3 doses, before any real affect can be noticed. Fresh herbs always work better than old herbs and science is always proving the fact that a whole herb usually is more effective than one isolated compound of that herb.

Do you know what foods will give you more energy, calm your nerves, act as an anti-inflammatory, help prevent cancers, or help you lose weight? Hopefully this column will help you to have a better understanding of food and its healing properties. The best diet for optimal health is a wide variation of foods, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and minimally cooked whole foods. Sweets, fatty foods, meat, dairy and carbs in moderation.

Brussels Sprouts:

Therapeutic Properties: Mainly as a good source of sulfur, which has been tagged the "beauty mineral" because it keeps hair shiny and the complexion clear. Sulfur also aids in the detoxification of pollutants and toxins from the body by stimulating bile production and is needed for tissue respiration.

Glucobrassicin, a glucosinolate particularly abundant in Brussels sprouts, has been shown to fight inflammation. 1 1/2 cups of Brussels sprouts contains about 430 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids (about ⅓ of the daily recommended amount) that are an essential part of our body's anti-inflammatory messaging molecules.
Cancer Prevention
Glucosinolates in Brussels sprouts and their detox-activating isothiocyanates are shown to fight against and even prevent various cancers, including bladder, breast, colon, lung, prostate, and ovarian cancer.
In fact, brussels sprouts are a storehouse of several flavonoid anti-oxidants like thiocyanates, indoles, lutein, zea-xanthin, sulforaphane and isothiocyanates. Together, these phytochemicals offer protection from prostate, colon, and endometrial cancers.
Zea-xanthin, an important dietary carotenoid in sprouts, is selectively absorbed into the retinal macula-lutea in the eyes where it is thought to provide anti-oxidant and protective light-filtering functions from UV rays. Thus, it helps prevent retinal damage, "age-related macular degeneration related macular degeneration disease" (ARMD), in the elderly.

Acid or Alkaline: alkaline

Significant Nutrients: Sulfer, iron, anti-oxidants, is a phytochemical which aids in fighting cancer and is estrogenic (metabolizes estrogen) like broccoli Sprouts are a good source of vitamin A, required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and is essential for good vision. Foods rich in this vitamin have been found to offer protection against lung and oral cavity cancers.

Excellent vegetable sources for vitamin-K necessary for bone health by promoting osteotrophic (bone formation and strengthening) activity. Adequate vitamin-K levels in the diet help limiting neuronal damage in the brain and thereby, preventing or at least, delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Growing: Brussels sprouts require a long growing season so they must be started indoors very early than transplanted out in the garden by mid-spring. They like cool temps, so plant in a semi-shady location in more southern areas. They grow very well in greenhouses over the winter, but do take up a lot of room. However, the flavor of homegrown brussels far exceeds any in the grocery store, especially the frozen variety. In mild areas, or where there is deep snow cover, the sprouts may overwinter if mulched well. For a nifty tip on how to keep aphids (which love brussels) off of your plants, see our Garden Circkles page.

Fact or Fallacy: Avoid Bananas? Don't be Stupid.

Recently there are a lot of internet ads and b.s going around "advising" people to give up bananas because they are fattening. You've seen the ads: "5 foods you should avoid to lose weight" gimmick? The latest health craze seems to be to convince people glycemic index is bad.

First of all, unless you are eating a lot of bananas, more than one per day, the sugar in them (glycemic index) is not a problem. Second of all, bananas are one of the food sources that are fairly high in potassium, which most Americans are deficient in, so I would not recommend avoiding bananas for the little bit of sugar you get from them because they are so high in potassium.

If you are worried about your glycemic index, avoiding sodas should be the #1 thing to get rid of in your diet. Then simple carbs, which have a much higher glycemic index per nutrient value than fruits. The key with this latest hoaky poaky on "glycemic index" is to evaluate the food in question. Does it offer other good nutrients, or is it mostly sugar? If we based our diets on glycemic index like so many of these bogus ads would have us do, we would be eliminating almost all fruits and carbs from our diet. Fact is, our body needs some amount of sugar, some amount of carbs, just as it needs sodium. Cutting out simple sugars and estrogen-laden foods will do much more for your ability to lose weight than cutting out fresh fruits that you need for the other benefits they offer, like fiber, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, trace minerals etc: which these ads never mention. Ever notice that?
