Some Wart Removers are Flammable.

Some cryogenic wart removers—which remove warts from the skin by freezing them off—have caught fire during use at home, harming consumers or setting fire to items around the house. "This is extremely concerning, especially because people may not be aware that everyday household items like curling irons and straight irons can be hot enough to be an ignition source for these products," Nast says.

Since 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—which regulates wart removers as medical devices—has received 14 such reports about over-the-counter (OTC) wart remover products, which are a mixture of liquid dimethyl ether and propane.

Ten patients have described singed hair, blisters, burns or skin redness, according to FDA nurse consultant Karen Nast, RN. Nearby items have also caught fire.

"The labeling for these products clearly states that they are flammable and should be kept away from fire, flame, heat sources, and cigarettes," Nast notes. In three of the reports, there was a candle nearby, but in the other 11 reports no ignition source was identified.

Natural Wart Removers:

The key to killing off warts is to stop the flow of oxygen to them. This may sound like a strange home remedy, but if you put duct tape over plantar warts and leave it on continuously, it suffocates the wart until it starts to die. Scrape off any dead skin daily and repeat the process until the wart is gone. Some people have added using crushed aspirin or apple cider vinegar, spreading it on the wart and then covering it with the duct tape. Others swear by drinking green tea daily, which may work because of the tannins or caffeine.

Our experience, and that of many others is that the duct tape solutions works the best. This method cannot and should not be used for genital warts, since they are in a very sensitive area. Keep duct tape over the wart continually every day until the wart turns black or falls off. Apply fresh duct tape daily and scrape off any excess dead skin on the wart before applying a new piece of tape.

Baking Soda: Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply a thick coating to the wart. Put a dry Band-Aid or gauze on it to hold the baking soda in place and keep it on all day. Refresh the baking soda paste every day. It may take up to 2 weeks for the wart to dry up.

Genital Warts: Thuja occidentalis ointment has been found effective for genital warts. Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen coniferous tree, in the cypress family Cupressaceae, which is native to the northeast of the United States and the southeast of Canada. Common names include: White Cedar, Yellow Cedar, Atlantic White Cedar, Eastern White Cedar, Swamp cedar, Cedrus Lycea, False White Cedar, Hackmatack, Lebensbaum, Thuia du Canada,  American Arborvitae or just Arborvitae.

The needles or branch of the tree are used for medicinal properties. Therapeutically, thuja is used in two forms - infusion and tincture. Since most tinctures are made with alcohol which will burn, we do not recommend using the tincturet for genital warts.

Homemade Infusion: To prepare an infusion with thuja, add one teaspoonful of the dehydrated herb to a cup (250 ml) of boiling water and allow it to steep for about 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and keep refrigerated for use. For best results, this infusion should be applied three times every day.

Being Tired all the Time Could be Simple Anemia.

Many women complain of feeling sluggish, tired and drained. Anemia has been a problem for women for centuries and is often the most common reason for lack of energy, but we tend to forget about it because being anemic has been a problem for women for years.

When the number of red blood cells or your hemoglobin level is too low, your body doesn’t get all of the oxygen it needs, and that can make you feel very tired. You may also have other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, pale skin, or cold hands and feet.
Anemia arises when your body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells. You may either have too few red blood cells, or they may be lacking in an iron-rich protein called hemoglobin. Red blood cells are responsible for delivering oxygen throughout your body, and hemoglobin is the protein that carries the oxygen.
The most common type of anemia occurs when your body lacks iron. This condition is called iron-deficiency anemia, and it often arises if you don’t have enough iron in your diet. Your body needs iron and other nutrients to make hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells. So it’s important to get a regular supply of iron as well as vitamin B12, folate, and protein. You can get these nutrients by eating a balanced diet or taking dietary supplements.
Another common cause of iron-deficiency anemia is blood loss, which might arise from injury, childbirth, or surgery. Women of child-bearing age are at risk for iron-deficiency anemia due to blood loss from menstrual periods.

Many people living with anemia may not realize they have it. They might have very mild symptoms or none at all. A doctor can determine whether you have anemia by a simple blood test. If you are slightly anemic, like many people, some of your blood cells will not be round but more oval or elongated. Deformed, so to speak.
Common types of iron-deficient anemia can be prevented and treated by eating iron-rich foods. The best sources are red meat (especially beef and liver), poultry, fish, and shellfish. Other foods high in iron include peas, lentils, beans, tofu, dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, dried fruits such as prunes and raisins, and iron-fortified cereals and breads.

Foods High in Iron:
Kidney beans
Beef liver
Beef (chuck roast, lean ground beef)
Turkey leg
Whole wheat bread
Peanut butter
Brown rice
Raisin bran (enriched)

Another common type of anemia is pernicious anemia, a condition in which the body can't make enough healthy red blood cells because it doesn't have enough vitamin B12.
Vitamin B12 is a nutrient found mostly only in meats. The body needs this nutrient to make healthy red blood cells and to keep its nervous system working properly. People who have pernicious anemia can't absorb enough vitamin B12 from food because they lack intrinsic factor (IF), a protein made in the stomach, or aren't getting enough B12 in their diet due to stomach absorption problems, or being vegetarian and not supplementing their diet with B12 to make up for not getting it in meat products.

Other conditions and factors also can cause vitamin B12 deficiency. Examples include infections, surgery, medicines, and diet. Technically, the term "pernicious anemia" refers to vitamin B12 deficiency due to a lack of intrinsic factor. Often though, vitamin B12 deficiency due to other causes also is called pernicious anemia.

Along with the autoimmune process that attacks the IF protein and lowers IF levels in stomach secretions, another autoimmune reaction against the stomach lining cells also occurs, resulting in a form of inflammation known as chronic gastritis. With the high amount of pesticides, GMOs and other toxins in our food supply, our stomach lining rarely ever functions as it should and our absorption of nutrients is lacking greatly in most people. Before trying to fix an anemic condition with supplements or by eating more B12 and iron-rich foods, it is only beneficial to first fix the stomach lining and bring it back to optimal health or no amount of supplementation will do much good because you simply are not absorbing any nutrients, no matter in what form, as you should.

Bringing the Stomach Back to Optimal Health.

This is a excerpt from our article archives on leaky gut syndrome but applies to all stomach problems.

If you have or have had chronic gastritis, bloating, abnormal amounts of gas or indigestion, your stomach is not functioning as it should be. Considering that our stomach lining is under constant attack by toxins, GMOs and unhealthy bacteria that upsets the balance of this delicate environment, it is no wonder we are having so many digestion and deficiency problems these days.

If you are experiencing digestive problems, here is the best regimen anybody has found to repair it. This process, on average, takes about 6-18 months to fully reverse leaky gut syndrome and other digestive issues depending on how diligent you are with it; it can take years for severe cases. People over 50 years old should start to follow this procedure regularly because their digestion is naturally slowing with age and their immunity will be weaker at a time when they need it most.

- Take a plant enzyme with every meal to help you digest if you are experiencing bloating or gastritis after eating. Plant enzymes work much better than other enzymes because they are acid-stable. In other words, they are able to resist the rigors of stomach acid in order to reach the intestinal tract where they will do the most good. Other enzymes do not make it passed the stomach and thus are completely ineffective.

- Brewer's yeast is excellent: We wrote an article on brewer's yeast last month explaining how extremely beneficial it is for rebuilding and maintaining the entire body and the digestive system because not only is it the only supplement that contains RDA - a compound that will help you to digest proteins, carbs and fats, it has all the essential amino acids (proteins), including NAG (N-Acetyl-L-Glutamine) which is very relevant to rebuilding the intestinal lining and scavenging free radicals. Also, since brewer's yeast is a complete protein that is easily digested by the body, it makes the best protein source to take until your digestion can handle meat - which will not be broken down well at all by a sluggish digestive system and should be avoided until it's repaired.

- Rebuild the friendly flora in the digestive system with high quality probiotics. We would recommend a refrigerated, fresh probiotic over any shelf-stable pills or processed yogurts. Acidophilus is a good place to start, but there are so many more digestive flora than just this one that the body requires, so get a multi-flora supplement or probiotic.

- Additional supplements may be necessary if you are experiencing severe intestinal problems. Gamma-oryzanol is a rice bran supplement that helps to heal and protect digestive mucosa and rebuild the lining. It should be taken before bed, or first thing in the morning 1-2 hours before eating so it's on an empty stomach. For people with severe cases of gastric distress and specifically gastritis - which is an inflammation of the intestinal lining resulting in severe bloating and pain- Gamma-oryzanol works very well.

- Free radicals, which cause cancers, are produced by intestinal inflammation and pathogens, so be diligent in eating plenty of antioxidant foods while in this repair mode. It's a good idea anyway, but with your digestion being compromised, you have a higher risk for having even more free radicals in your system than normal.

- In order to reverse leaky gut and food allergies, the diet must be changed to be as hypo-allergenic as possible. Baby and honor your digestion during this healing process by eating only organic foods with at least 50% of your diet being raw vegetables, 25% being raw fruits, use brewer's yeast and organic eggs as meat substitutes trying to stay away from meats as much as possible. Eat smaller meals more frequently rather than large meals. Avoid fish for the first 6 months of this regimen because the high mercury content in it will exasperate the problem, as well as sugar, flours with gluten, caffeine, alcohol and high fat foods like dairy and meats. Use flax oils, olive and grape seed oils instead to get your omega fatty acids. Avoid chemicals, drugs and over-the-counter remedies especially Advil or Aleve, at all costs while fixing your immune system otherwise you are reversing any progress you are making.

- If you know you have intestinal bacteria or parasites as a result of leaky gut, it's also necessary to take a natural antibiotic such as echinacea, colloidal silver, black walnut hull extract or garlic.

Another study from just 2-3 months ago stated that people who eat organic can live 5-10 years longer on average than those who don't. This isn't rocket science People; it's common sense. The saying, "you are what you eat," is exactly right. While the body is very adaptable and you can "survive" while ingesting petroleum products from plastics and a multitude of other toxins, you won't survive very well or very long. Just try it. Try eating nothing but organic and balancing your diet to what we mentioned above and see if you don't feel better in as little as a couple weeks. The majority of people who try it never go back to eating the way they used to because they can feel the difference themselves and there is no greater proof that what we are telling you is true than that. Of course, if you don't even try it, you will never know.

Acupressure for Headache Relief.

Caused by Neck Tension: Feel along your trapezius, the large muscle that runs from the high point of both shoulders and joins your neck (GB 21). Use your thumbs, index, and middle fingers to squeeze the muscle just below where it attaches to both sides of your neck. You'll be releasing "trigger points," tiny muscle spasms that can cause neck tension and are a common cause of headaches. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute—or have a friend do it for you.
Or try: massaging one or two drops of peppermint essential oil into the same trigger points and the lower neck. Peppermint oil relaxes muscles in spasm and also works when applied to the temples.

Pain In the Temples: Directly behind your earlobes, in that little dimple behind the ear right where it connects to the neck, is a very strong pressure point that will instantly relieve any pain in your head. You have to apply the correct amount of pressure to these points however. If you press too hard, it could cause worse pain. The key is to press lightly on the area directly behind your earlobes and press against your jawbone. Hold the acupressure for a few minutes then let up on your finger pressure very slowly. If you release the acupressure too quickly, it can cause a sudden surge of blood back into the brain and make it start throbbing again.

Acupressure works best if you can apply it in a quiet environment and can possibly fall asleep afterward, such as in bed.

How to use herbs for maximum benefit. Short and sweet descriptions and uses written by our on-staff Nutritional Herbalist. Always remember that herbs should be treated as a medicine. Almost all of our modern-day medicines are derived from compounds found in herbs and plants. If you have not used a particular herb before, try a half dose at first to make sure you do not have an unfavorable reaction to it.

Eucalyptus Eucalyptus spp. Myrtaceae.

Medicinal Properties: The medicinal properties of Eucalyptus come from its oil and many people know of its ability to relieve upper respiratory congestion. It has been the primary ingredient in Vick's Vapor Rub products for years. Use for bronchitis, cough and to break up congestion in the lungs and sinuses. Human testing has proven that the essential oil of Eucalyptus dilates the bronchioles in the lungs, has antiseptic properties and is an effective expectorant.

How to Use: Make an infusion by steeping a handful of fresh or dried leaves or just a couple drops of the essential oil in 1 quart of boiling water for 20-30 minutes. Breathe in the vapors while covering your head and the pan with a towel to isolate the steam.

Parts Used: Leaves

Warning: Never us Eucalyptus oil on the skin in full strength, it can burn or cause irritation. Dilute it with olive oil. Eucalyptus is also a mild anesthesia, so do not apply too much of it to the skin or it could stop your heart. Start with only a drop or two. If you suddenly feel faint, wash it off immediately with soap.

Some Herb Basics: Most herbs work better on an empty stomach. A few exceptions are garlic, goldenseal and cayenne due to stomach upset. Herbs work in a cumulative fashion meaning they are not a "one dose wonder." They need to build up in the system a little, usually within 2-3 doses, before any real affect can be noticed. Fresh herbs always work better than old herbs and science is always proving the fact that a whole herb usually is more effective than one isolated compound of that herb.

Do you know what foods will give you more energy, calm your nerves, act as an anti-inflammatory, help prevent cancers, or help you lose weight? Hopefully this column will help you to have a better understanding of food and its healing properties. The best diet for optimal health is a wide variation of foods, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and minimally cooked whole foods. Sweets, fatty foods, meat, dairy and cars in moderation.

Corn as an Allergen.

Therapeutic Properties: Really, the only medicinal qualities of corn are that it blocks estrogen levels in women who are estrogen-dominant, and it is high in magnesium. Corn is a simple starch, which means it can cause weight gain and has very little nutritional value. It is also a known allergen for people and pets. As an allergen it can cause migraines, itchy skin, rash in pre-menopausal women, arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Acid or Alkaline: Acid - one of the few vegetables that is acid forming in the body

Significant Nutrients: Mainly considered "empty carbs," corn's only real nutritional benefit is for fiber and magnesium. Should be eaten sparingly.

Phytoestrogen? No. Blocks excess estrogen.
