Heavy Metal Toxins Even in Organic.

Mercury in fish, heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and aluminum in foods labeled as organic? Heavy metals like mercury, lead and aluminum have been reported to disrupt normal cell function, suppress the immune system and disrupt normal brain function. What is a consumer to do when government agencies will not even step in on our behalf to make sure we have reasonably clean food?

Chelation will help to some extent, avoidance even more. Avoid the foods that are known to be high in toxic heavy metals. Most recently that is anything coming from China, especially rice, ginkgo biloba supplements and even organic produce.

China is a nation that has virtually no environmental regulation enforcement. In China, anything goes: You can dump mercury into rivers. You can spray raw human sewage sludge on crops. You can produce factory-made chemicals and blow the waste products right into the air through smokestacks. In China, many rivers are so toxic that, from time to time, they actually catch on fire and burn. Forty percent of the population there does not have access to clean water, and recently, a Chinese environmental agent was offered $30,000 to take a swim in a local river; to which he declined.

How do heavy metals get into our foods even if they are organic? By chemical agricultural runoff and contaminated ground water from conventional farms and growers, air pollution, inefficient or improper disposal of chemicals by manufacturers, exhaust from vehicles etc. In essence, there is really no such thing as truly organic anymore, due to the fact that our soils, water and air are so contaminated by pollution and heavy metal toxins. Yes, we have big ag companies like Monsanto to thank for this, who have no regard or regulation as to how much they spray chemicals all over our soils. To add insult to injury, government regulation just allowed Monsanto to spray their pesticides at an even higher rate than in the past, so rather than cutting back on contamination, they are giving the most hated company in America free-rein to spray even more.

So what about products from the U.S that are known to contain heavy metals? The U.S also does not require testing for heavy metals even in organic products, but here are a few comparisons on the most contaminated products known so far:

The most unreliable aspect of the FDA and USDA and their standards, is that they do not take into account the cumulative effect of heavy metals, or any toxic substance for that matter. While they will give an acceptable standard of say, .5ppm as being an "acceptable" amount of lead, this standard is based on only one product that contains lead, when there are numerous products that contain lead, and it also only applies to one dose or serving of that product. The agency's acceptable allowable limits do not take into account the fact that most people are eating multiple items contaminated with a heavy metal, and that those heavy metals accumulate in the body over time, stored in body fat. So while .5ppm may be an unharmful amount according to regulatory agencies, most people are actually getting 3-4 times that in various other foods, forms and sources every day.

Foods to help chelate heavy metals from the body:

Chelation helps the body to rid itself of heavy metals by binding to them so they can be excreted rather than stored in body fat and tissue for years and years. Apples work well to chelate mercury, as well as fresh cilantro and magnesium. Some metals are easier to chelate than others, but in order for chelation to be effective, it must be done on a regular basis; at least once a week.

The high levels of citric acid in limes and lemons help the liver to remove chelated heavy metals. Chlorella has been advertised for years as a good chelation supplement, however, chlorella from some areas is heavily contaminated with metals itself, so be sure to only buy chlorella that is labeled to say it is harvested from clean waters. Tests have shown chlorella performs well in chelating mercury, lead, uranium and cadmium.

Your Favorite Snack Food May be Killing You Slowly.

You probably heard rumors over the last 2 years that microwave popcorn is bad for you. You may not know why or what you can do about it without giving up one of your all-time favorite, and otherwise healthier snack foods. Alan Greene MD has been studying the effects of microwave popcorn on health for over 10 years and has determined it can cause cancer, kidney and thyroid disease over time.

Popcorn in it's natural state makes for a very good snack or "junk" food compared to most. It is low in sugar, high in fiber and low in fat depending on how much butter is on it. When a health warning started circulating a couple years ago that microwave popcorn was bad for your health, many people were not informed as to why and what they could do about it. So we will straighten out the confusion for you. And no, you don't have to give up one of your favorite snacks.

What is so bad about microwave popcorns?

#1. The Bag: Microwavable bags are lined with a shiny coating that's only purpose is to prevent the oils also added to the popcorn from leaking through the bag. They DO NOT make the popcorn pop any better, faster or with fewer unpopped kernels. PFOA - the nonstick chemical used to line popcorn bags accumulates in the body over time.

#2. The Flavorings: Artificial butter flavorings, such as diacetyl, have been contributed to what is called "popcorn lung" or lung disease in factory workers who breathe it into their lungs in large quantities. Now while most health professionals say you would have to eat 2 bags of popcorn every day for a long period of time, such as a year, to develop popcorn lung, most reputable popcorn manufacturers have removed it anyway. However, "artificial flavorings" are just that: artificial. Which means they are a chemical compound or highly processed derivative of some substance rather than real butter. Usually a transfat is used in artificial flavorings because it does not become rancid sitting on store shelves over time.

Solution: Any paper bag will work to pop corn in the microwave with absolutely nothing added to it. Butter and salt it after you empty your popped corn into a bowl. Using a hot air popper is also a good way to pop corn in a clean, less-contaminated way.



Vitamin E:
What's it Good For.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble nutrient found in many foods. In the body, it acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are compounds formed when our bodies convert the food we eat into energy. People are also exposed to free radicals in the environment from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultraviolet light from the sun.
The body also needs vitamin E to boost its immune system so that it can fight off invading bacteria and viruses. It helps to widen blood vessels and keep blood from clotting within them. In addition, cells use vitamin E to interact with each other and to carry out many important functions.

Foods That Contain Vitamin E.
Vitamin E is found naturally in foods and is added to some fortified foods. You can get recommended amounts of vitamin E by eating a variety of foods including the following: Vegetable oils like wheat germ, sunflower, and safflower oils are among the best sources of vitamin E. Corn, grapeseed and soybean oils also provide some vitamin E. Nuts (such as peanuts, hazelnuts, and, especially, almonds) and seeds (like sunflower seeds) are also among the best sources of vitamin E and some green vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli.
Food companies add vitamin E to some breakfast cereals, fruit juices, margarines and spreads, and other foods. To find out which ones have vitamin E, check the product labels.

You May Have Noticed Different Forms of Vitamin E?
Although vitamin E sounds like a single substance, it is actually the name of eight related compounds in food, including alpha-tocopherol. Each form has a different potency, or level of activity in the body.
Vitamin E from natural (food) sources is listed as "d-alpha-tocopherol" on food packaging and supplement labels. Synthetic (laboratory-made) vitamin E is listed as "dl-alpha-tocopherol." The natural form is more potent. For example, 100 IU of natural vitamin E is equal to about 150 IU of the synthetic form.
Some vitamin E supplements provide other forms of the vitamin, such as gamma-tocopherol, tocotrienols, and mixed tocopherols. Scientists do not know if any of these forms are superior to alpha-tocopherol in supplements.

Vitamin E deficiency is very rare in healthy people. It is almost always linked to certain diseases where fat is not properly digested or absorbed. Examples include Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, and certain rare genetic diseases such as abetalipoproteinemia and ataxia with vitamin E deficiency (AVED). Vitamin E needs some fat for the digestive system to absorb it.
Vitamin E deficiency can cause nerve and muscle damage that results in loss of feeling in the arms and legs, loss of body movement control, muscle weakness, and vision problems. Another sign of deficiency is a weakened immune system.

Can You Take Too Much?
Eating vitamin E in foods is not risky or harmful. In supplement form, high doses of vitamin E might increase the risk of bleeding (by reducing the blood's ability to form clots after a cut or injury) and of serious bleeding in the brain (known as hemorrhagic stroke). The highest safe level of intake from supplements for adults is 1,500 IU/day for natural forms of vitamin E and 1,100 IU/day for the synthetic form.

HOME REMEDIES: Pimples / Acne.

Treat oncoming pimples with tea tree oil and witch hazel, both of which have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. As soon as you feel a pimple forming, dot either tonic on the area twice a day for two or three days. Never use rubbing alcohol because that only dries out and irritates skin without having any effect on the bacteria that cause acne.

Should you pop a pimple? It depends. If it has formed a white head, popping it may make it look better visually; just be sure it is ready to pop so you don't have to damage the skin around it causing scaring and more redness. Applying a washcloth soaked in hot water to a pimple will often bring it to a head for easier popping. Soak the pimple again with hot water after popping it to bring more pus to the surface that may still be in the pore. This also helps to bring circulation to the area so it will look less red and inflamed. After you pop it and hold a hot washcloth on it for a few seconds, apply peroxide or tea tree oil to kill any bacteria still in the pore.

Some Herb Basics: Most herbs work better on an empty stomach. A few exceptions are garlic, goldenseal and cayenne due to stomach upset. Herbs work in a cumulative fashion meaning they are not a "one dose wonder." They need to build up in the system a little, usually within 2-3 doses, before any real affect can be noticed. Fresh herbs always work better than old herbs and science is always proving the fact that a whole herb usually is more effective than one isolated compound of that herb.
