Calder's Revolvers the group

Calder's Revolvers.

JULY 10, 2015: FREE BACKYARD CONCERT SERIES
ANYTHINK WRIGHT FARMS – THORNTON
"Come hang with us for an evening of FREE tunes in the out of doors at Thornton’s Anythink Wright Farms library. Anythink libraries are way different than regular libraries and super rad, check one out if you haven’t been. This one gonna be real fun!"

Hailing from Denver, Calder’s Revolvers offers an unabashed take on modern soul, with heavy backbeats, pulsing guitar riffs and heart-wrenching vocals. Their pop-focused arrangements walk a line between rock and R&B, revealing layers of horns, organs and a chorus of backup harmonies that evoke memories of another era.

Calder's Revolvers on stage

To listen to them, you might think you just jettisoned back in time to the 1950s, their sound is so reminiscent of that time. However, the band has managed to keep their sound current enough to appeal to today's listener. Schneider has one of the clearest voices you will ever hear and does an excellent job at throwing a blues twist into his voice if it fits a song.

Calder’s Revolvers formed in 2010 with Andy Schneider on vocals, Brad Johnson on guitar, Cole Strain on bass and Sam Gault on drums. After releasing two EPs (“Self-Titled” and “Black Bloc”), the band moved from their garage-rock roots to a more soulful exploration. In 2013, they released their debut album, “Steady By Your Side.” The album was voted Readers’ Choice for Best New Recording in Westword’s 2013 Best of Denver. Soon after, the band added backup singer Alea Kilgore, Ross Hostage on sax and Squidds Madden on trumpet.

With sounds like this becoming popular again, it shows music is taking another "revival" turn to the days when it had more substance and fullness. Calder's Revolvers could become a really big part of that niche if they market themselves correctly. So far, they are primarily big on the local band circuit in Denver, let's hope they catch on and stick around. A large band with sound of this caliber is not easy to find anymore. Give their newest album a listen below.

Whatever Happened to....The Band?

There is actually a very good documentary film on The Band on Netflix right now called, "The Last Waltz." I watched it last night. Excellent soundtrack and the stars that appeared on stage with them in the day, huge names, you will never get them all together on stage like that again. Names like Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Joanie Mitchell, Ron Wood (Guitarist from The Stones and Rod Stewart) Muddy Waters, and various other big names, all appearing when they were at the top of their game. This is a video worth watching if you are a music buff at all. It has been labeled by some as the greatest rock n'roll film ever made.

The documentary was shot before drummer of The Band, Levon Helm died of throat cancer at the ripe old age of 71 in 2012. He had been doing solo bluegrass albums and appearances after The Band broke up. Helm also appeared in a few movies, such as appearing as Loretta Lynn's father in the Coal Miner's Daughter, as Chuck Yeager's friend and colleague Captain Jack Ridley in The Right Stuff, and as an iconic, Tennessee firearms expert in Shooter.

There is no end to the memorabilia still being sold on The Band. Such as...

The "complete recordings" from Bob Dylan's infamous sessions with The Band all in one place for the first time. With a selection of recordings that were just recently unearthed and lovingly restored, this historic six-disc set is the definitive chronicle of Dylan's legendary 1967 recording sessions with The Band. You can pick up The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11(Deluxe Edition).

RollingStone.com has a great piece on Sebastian Robertson's new children's book Rock & Roll Highway – a love letter of sorts to his dad, Robbie. Find out what it was like growing up with the famed guitarist who his son merely thought of as "the guy that made me do my homework, drove me to little league games, made me breakfast and brought me to school." Rock and Roll Highway: The Robbie Robertson Story, Robertson's second children's book, is in stores now.  Pick it up here.

Seriously, if you can catch The Last Waltz on Netflix or YouTube, you won't be disappointed if you are into music at all.

NASHVILLE – CMA Music Festival will be the hottest concert destination of the summer with today’s announcement that Country Music superstars Jason Aldean, Dierks BentleyLuke BryanEric ChurchBrett EldredgeFlorida Georgia LineSam HuntAlan JacksonLady AntebellumLittle Big TownNeal McCoy,Oak Ridge BoysBrad PaisleyRascal FlattsThomas RhettDarius RuckerCole SwindellThe Band PerryKeith UrbanWynonna & The Big Noise, andZac Brown Band will each take the stage during the Nightly Concerts at LP Field.

The 2015 CMA Music Festival takes place Thursday, June 11 – Sunday, June 14 in downtown Nashville.

While the relationship between artists and fans is the foundation for the event, CMA Music Festival benefits music education programs for children in need. Wednesday morning, Thomas Rhett welcomed guests to Nashville Children’s Theatre for a performance of “Jack’s Tale: A Mythic Mountain Musical,” which was funded by a $10,000 grant from the CMA Foundation from the 2014 CMA Music Festival. Threats of snow in Nashville prevented a majority of students from attending, but he warmly greeted the enthusiastic crowd.

“When I was little I was in a play called ‘A Christmas Carol’. I was Scrooge,” Thomas Rhett told the student-filled crowd. “Music education was super important for me, and today was a good reminder of how neat it is to see the country music community band together to help give back to that through CMA Fest.”

The CMA Foundation presents grants on behalf of the artists who perform at CMA Music Festival each year for free and has donated more than $11 million to music education initiatives across the country.

Although tickets to the Nightly Concerts at LP Field sold out last November, across the river from the stadium, there are countless free and low-cost entertainment options for fans around downtown Nashville as part of the CMA Music Festival. Seven free entertainment stages give fans an opportunity to choose their musical adventure, including the hugely popular Chevrolet Riverfront Stage, which consistently fills the Cumberland riverbank each of the four days.

Farm Aid board artists

Farm Aid 2015:

Preparations for Farm Aid's 30th Anniversary Concert, which will take place on September 19, are under way. Stay tuned to see who will be joining Farm Aid board artists Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews on the stage.

"The first Farm Aid concert featured more than 50 artists on one stage. In the 29 years since, hundreds more artists have given their time and talent to support family farmers. This year, we would like to invite even more artists to join us onstage as we celebrate family farm agriculture." –– Willie Nelson

"The legacy of Farm Aid is twofold: in the change we’ve made in our farm and food system, and in the rich musical record of concerts held since 1985. The list of artists who have played on the Farm Aid stage is a who’s who of the best artists of our time." –– John Mellencamp

“Just as rock & roll is loud and proud, so is Farm Aid. Farm Aid's greatest accomplishment, I believe, is in the spirit. It's the fact that we represent the spirit of the good fight, to keep something good happening. It just keeps getting stronger and stronger....” Neil Young

Follow the Farm Aid site for announcements to see who else will appear at the concert this year.
